More Than Freedom: The Legacy of Octavius V. Catto

This exhibition pays tribute to the life of Philadelphia activist Octavius V. Catto. Almost a century before well-known civil rights figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Catto was using civil disobedience tactics to desegregate the city’s public transit system. He was a 19th century forerunner in civil rights, education and community organizing. He was also a gifted base ball player for the Pythians, the first Black baseball club in Philadelphia.
